This is the first of my interview posts. I asked Katie, a woman whose daughter attends speech therapy with my daughter, what her greatest accomplishment was and this is what I learned about her.
She said "Right now my greatest accomplishment is that I am learning to fly by the seat of my pants." Katie is very much a structured person, she needs to finish what she starts and have order in all things. In October that all halted when she gave birth to her son Lucas. He is disabled. At four months old he can not swallow, this combined with his other stunted development leaves Katie to do much more for a newborn than is required of most Moms. Katie cannot go in the car with Lucas without another adult to help suction his throat, because his swallow reflex doesn't work. At night she gets up multiple times to get the "gunk" out of his throat so it doesn't get into his airway. Katie says doing all of this and more for Lucas combined with raising and caring for her older daughter, Olivia's needs keep her going day to day, and no longer can she be on a rigid schedule. After hearing her story I think Katie's accomplishments are greater than learning to fly by the seat of her pants. Katie is one of the many examples in this world of a mother's love for her children and the huge accomplishment it is to raise them day to day, flying by the seat of your pants.
